French Drain Solutions for Effective Shellharbour Runoff Management

Resolving Water Ingress Challenges in Shellharbour

A homeowner in Shellharbour encountered a pressing problem with water ingress. Rainwater from two neighbouring properties, which are situated on higher ground, started to flow into the yard, seeping under the foundation of the house. This intrusion caused damage to the flooring, led to rising damp, and promoted mould growth within the property, jeopardising recent renovations.

How Can You Identify Water Intrusion Symptoms?

The water ingress resulted from both surface runoff and subsurface water flowing downhill from the back and side yards of adjacent properties. In the absence of adequate drainage to intercept this incoming water, it was compelled to travel beneath the house, leading to significant problems.

Creating an Effective Drainage System

CS Plumbing designed and installed a gravity-fed French drain system aimed at capturing and redirecting water before it could penetrate the home’s foundation.

The project incorporated several vital components:

  • A French drain system specifically tailored to collect both surface and subsurface water from neighbouring properties, efficiently channeling it through gravity to a concrete pit.
  • A 100mm PVC pipe extending from the pit to the curb, featuring carefully drilled holes to maximise water discharge efficiency.
  • Three new, larger-diameter Colorbond metal downpipes replacing the original smaller ones, connected to new 100mm PVC piping directing water to the curb.
  • A sturdy retaining wall system constructed along the boundary using concrete sleepers and galvanised steel posts, with auger holes drilled by an excavator, creating a solid barrier that prevents water from the adjacent yard.
  • Efficient soil removal executed on-site using a dumper for effective site management.

What Strategies Guarantee Effective Water Management?

The newly established system effectively captures both surface and subsurface water at the property boundary, ensuring it is redirected away from the home. The homeowner now enjoys a durable, low-maintenance solution that protects their foundation, flooring, and investment in renovations.
